Nearly a quarter of a mile long, Serpent Mound apparently represents an uncoiling serpent. Serpent Mound lies on a plateau overlooking the valley of Brush Creek. Nearby conical mounds contained burials and implements characteristic of the prehistoric Adena people, however it is thought the Fort Ancient people built the Serpent Mound about 1000 years ago. Many questions surround the meaning of Serpent Mound, but there is little doubt it symbolized some religious or mythical principle for its builders. The museum contains exhibits on the mound and the geology of the surrounding area.

in Mt. Olivet, KY, 20 miles south of Maysville, KY via US Hwy. 68. Phone 606 289 5507 Park is open daily 9AM-5PM April 1 - October 31 ![]() The park encompasses 50 acres on the site of what is called the last battle of the Revolution and Indian-Pioneer struggle in Ky. Aug 1782. Blue Licks Battlefield State Park commemorates more than one era of history. Salt springs at Blue Licks attracted prehistoric mammoths and formed a center of Indian life, then later proved important to frontiersmen like Daniel Boone, who was captured here by Indians while operating saltworks. During the 19th century, the mineral springs were a popular health resort. But Blue Licks is most renowned as the site of the last battle of the Revolutionary War in Kentucky. In 1782, Kentuckians engaged Indians and British soldiers near the Licking River. Outnumbered, Kentucky suffered great losses, including one of Boone's sons. "Enough of honour cannot be paid," completes Daniel Boone's quote on the monument at the park for the fallen soldiers in the Battle of Blue Licks. The salt springs at Blue Licks date back to prehistoric times and were the center of Indian life for a while as well. The park has a museum and a monument to 60 pioneers including Daniel Boone's son who died in an Indian ambush. It has a nature preserve with hiking trails, an 18-hole miniature golf course, junior-Olympic sized pool, nature preserve, gift shop, picnic areas, and an interesting Pioneer Museum featuring mastodon bones and pioneer artifacts. The Blue Licks Pioneer Museum offers a short video presentation and a chance to examine mastodon bones, Native American artifacts, and Kentucky pioneer artifacts. The museum is open year-round but hours vary from season to season.
