What is today Higginsport's Grace Baptist Church was first organized about 1945 as a mission started by
the Georgetown Baptist Church. The Baptist Church in Higginsport remained a mission for nearly 4 years, at which time it became an organized church, under the name of the Grace Baptist Church. The first pastor was
Brother Bill Findley.

Shortly after its formation, the Grace Baptist church purchased the lot up
on which the current church building stands, but continued to hold services in the mission house next door until sufficient funds were raised to construct the church building.

The church building shown in the
photo above was built in 1970.

Approximately 50 people
comprise the congregation
of the Grace Baptist Church .

The Higginsport Christian Church was organized in 1839 by Elder John Phillips, an ordained elder of the southern Ohio Christian Conference. Elder Phillips was instrumental in starting Antioch College in Yellow Springs. The first Christian Church building in Higginsport, located on Washington Street was built in
1841 under the direction of Elder Matthew Gardner. On the 1880 plot map of the Village of Higginsport, this location is identified as being the New Light Church. The current
church building, located in the center

The land upon which the Union Chapel now stands, is part of 1,000 acres of land on Bullskin Creek purchased by Christian Shinkle on June 15, 1805 from J. R. Jacobs. Christian Shinkle donated land for a church, cemetary and school house. The grave of Christian Shinkle, died in 1833 and is buried in Shinkle's Ridge Cemetery bears a DAR marker.

In the spring of 1818, Elder Matthew Gardner, a newly installed minister of the Christian Church, visited the settlement on Shinkle's Ridge and there organized the Union Church. This was the first religious society in Lewis township, though there had previously been occasional preaching by ministers of different denominations. In 1819 the Union Church had about 200 members. The first chapel was erected in 1821. The church was rebuilt in 1852,
and the current church building
was erected in 1873.
