The Scenic Circle starts, of course, in Higginsport,
the Western Gateway to Brown County's beautiful River Hills.

To spend a day or more, you can start with a fascinating stop at the
Meldahl Locks, just 11 miles
"downriver" in Chilo, and continue (or begin) your trip with a jaunt across the Ohio on the Augusta Ferry.

Explore the historic town of Augusta, KY and visit its unique antique, art and craft shops, and take a
break for lunch or a snack at the Beehive Tavern or another of Augusta's eateries.

Then head East via Hwy. 8 to the Hwy. 62/68 bypass via the AA Highway (Hwy 9). Just 5 miles south of
the AA Hwy. via Hwy. 62/68 awaits Old Washington, KY, a historic village offering historical tours,
unique shops and a fascinating lunch experience at Marshall Key's Tavern.

Just north of Old Washington is Maysville, KY with its historic downtown area,
floodwall murals, the Kentucky Visitor's Information Center and a number of historical sites.

Back on the Ohio side of the river, Ripley, OH is just 8 miles west of the Old Bridge . After crossing the
bridge, go west 8 miles to Ripley, which offers its own unique blend of antique & specialty shops,
as well as riverfront dining at Cohearts Riverhouse. For those needing a "sweet-tooth break", plan a stop
at Ripley's famous 1950's style Rockin' Robin Soda Shop on Ripley's riverfront Front Street. If History is
"your thing", be sure to plan time for the Rankin House, the Tobacco Museum & the Ripley Museum.

For folks interested in traveling farther afield, a trip to Lewis Mt. Herbs & Everlastings north of
Manchester, or Miller's Amish Bakery & Furniture near West Union is a pleasant way to spend the
afternoon. While traveling in this direction, lunch or dinner at Moyer's Restaurant & Winery
in Manchester adds a special touch to your day or evening.

If Covered Bridges are your passion, this area of Southern OH and Northern KY offers several covered
bridges. Scenic backroads abound for those interested in a driving tour. Covered Bridge & an
Ohio River Hills Area Backroads Tour maps are available at the Tourist Information Booth in Higginsport,
as well as many of the shops along the way. Area historical sites include the historic towns of Augusta
& Old Washington, KY, the Rankin House & Parker House in Ripley, the Pioneer Graveyard and
Underground Railroad Museum in Maysville, and Grant's boyhood home & School in Georgetown.
Grant's Birthplace in Point Pleasant, OH
(just 20 miles west of Higginsport) is maintained by the
OH Historical Society and is also open for tours.
